Jan Brueghel the Elder

Joost de Momper

Country road with travellers and a wagon

Panel: 45,4 x 77,9 cm

introduction

The collaboration between these two artists is stunningly reflected in this landscape showing a Country Road with Travellers and a Wagon. The vivid, delicate palette of Jan 'Velvet' Brueghel, with his lively and colourful brushwork, combines particularly successfully here with the very loose style of Joost de Momper.

In their depiction of the surroundings of a village, these two great artists immerse the viewer into the reality of their age, inviting the eye to explore the sprawling, abundant natural setting. In Flemish iconography, the concept of abundance is synonymous with peace, and this painting fits perfectly into the historical context of its times, expressing the optimism buoyed by the Twelve Years' Truce between Archdukes Albert and Isabella and the Dutch Calvinists.

The formal coherence, thematic complementarity and the painterly virtuosity of the two artists is immediately apparent in this panel. Jan 'Velvet' Brueghel and Joos de Momper deploy all of their talents to create a landscape in which the perfect perspective, subtly crafted chromatic range and deep atmospheric effects only heighten the charm of the composition.
