Flemish paintings and animal sculptures
Geneva, May 2 – 31
Opening on May 4 from 4 P.M. and special opening on May 4 from 11 to 7 P.M. for Art en Vieille-Ville
For the 34th Art en Vieille-Ville event, which will be held in Geneva on 2 and 4 May 2024, the De Jonckheere Gallery is inviting Xavier Eeckhout for the exhibition Natural histories: Flemish painting and animal sculptures. Paintings by 16th and 17th century masters will be placed alongside Xavier Eeckhout’s collection of animals from the 1930s.
At the beginning of the 20th century, animals were portrayed for what they were, contrary to 16th and 17th century Flemish painting, where animals were part of the story. Here, their presence was codified and embodied a specific meaning.
By confronting these two forms of animal representation, the exhibition Natural histories: Flemish painting and animal sculpture takes spectators on an original proposal, where periods, styles, materials, ronde-bosse all come together in this setting, enhanced by the unique beauty of each work.
