As part of @Friezeofficial London, we are presenting this masterpiece, a portrait of Lucretia by the so-called Master of the Female Half-Lengths. It is a striking nude study: the sitter’s auburn hair is echoed in her beautifully rendered scarlet robe. The dark background accentuates the strong colours, as well as highlighting the flawless whiteness of her skin, which is as smooth as an alabaster vase.

Lucretia is so serene that is unclear at first (at least to a modern observer) that this is a woman in the act of suicide. Contemporary viewers, however, would have known that her self-sacrifice led to the fall of a tyrant – so in this work the nemesis is happening elsewhere, off-stage. The Lucretia that we see here, meanwhile, is a political martyr, brave and saintly. That explains her unearthly calm: she is a kind of civic icon, someone whose idealism has taken her beyond ordinary concerns of life and death.

David Teniers liked to portray impostors by highlighting their dubious practices. With this unique depiction of a Rat Poison Seller, he focuses on a 17th century rural phenomenon ; the illegal trade of arsenic leading to more domestic poisoning.

Signed and painted around 1660, the balance between style and subject is striking on this portrait of a charlatan.

Amusing and in good condition, this original work is a very good instance of Teniers the Younger’s vivacity.

@Friezeofficial Masters is now open to public!

Our autumnal selection for Frieze Masters 2024 is an ode to the inventiveness, mastery and visual foresight of our Masters.

The success of Pieter Brueghel the Younger relies in his very specific language. In the two opposite subjects unveiled at our A01 booth, a Payment of the Tithe and a Resurrection, one can find different of his satirical an true to life vocabulary.

To make sure everybody finds its match we gathered all kinds of subjects and formats. Our Bouquet of Flowers by Jan Brueghel the Younger is a symbol of pure beauty, alongside the complex and productive myth of the Babel Tower by Abel Grimmer.

Corneille de Lyon excelled at the art of portrait and translated every single feature of the faces he painted, when Pieter Huys purposely invented a whole world in his Temptation of Saint Anthony.

To better understand each painting, we analyze them through iconography, style and state of conservation. We would be happy to introduce you to our researches on the fair!

Signed and dated 1604, this painting tells the story of the Tower of Babel : to halt the progress of a Tower aiming to reach heavens, God instigated confusion with multiple languages.

Abel Grimmer combines his descriptive language and fine brunch stroke with the metaphorical sense of the myth to create this masterpiece.

Full of little everyday scenes, this allegorical composition can be read with different lenses that are ready to share with you.

📍In our @Friezeofficial London selection we brought an unusual, charming and poetic Peasant Meal.

This signed, delicate and original composition is unique in the work of Pieter Brueghel the Younger.

It joins a particular type of painting he developed after 1616.
The motif of the Peasants picnic appears in three compositions when the architecture of the thatch can be found in his depiction of Saint Michael’s Tavern or Village Streets by a Stream.

Painted with Brueghel’s characteristic touch, this meal in the open air near a duck pond in a meadow, witnesses his sensitivity.

Painting the world
A Flemish perspective of the 17th century

Flemish artists of the 17th century painted an authentic world. Vibrant, timeless, and sometimes fanciful, this window on their era evokes life and its conditions, sometimes happy, sometimes fragile. With a curiosity focusing on human beings, nature and spirituality, these illustrations defy time and our sensibilities.

In a world where we are overstimulated by pictures, photographs, paintings and now AI-generated images, the exploration of abstraction and hyper-realism by contemporary artists has already come full circle. As for the Flemish masters, their images were presented to a public whose daily lives were conditioned by the cycle of the seasons and religion. They developed a language of description and perfection, miraculously providing us with a key to these paintings today, which allows us to understand the period. Indeed, in their landscapes, genre scenes, still lifes and portraits, the Flemish perspective is one of precision, closeness to nature and an invitation to imagine.

Through this selection of subjects executed by artists from the Southern Netherlands, this exhibition showcases the creativity, visual genius and, above all, the eloquence of these artists with their unique style.

We are pleased to participate to Audrey Guttman’s Carte blanche exhibition: Images du Labyrinthe @christiesparis.

This exhibition celebrates the 100th anniversary of André Breton’s Surrealist Manifesto. Through an ephemeral installation, @audreygut recreates the poetic and dreamlike atmosphere of the Surrealist movement, highlighting works by icons as Duchamp, Dalí, and Magritte, and including unique pieces from prestigious private collections.

Our Pieter Huys painting joins this visionary journey, transporting visitors through the labyrinth of surrealist inspiration—from ancient sculptures to the mystical poetry of Lautréamont.
